Most events took place at Tingewick (Tw)


Between 1700 and 1850 there were six generations of Stockley families with much repeating of the same names. In this list, I have prefixed each name with its generation, starting with William and Sarah as (i)

  • 1796 :¬†George¬†Stockley witnessed marriage at Tingewick of Benjamin Mathews and Frances Holton¬†(all but bride signed names)
  • 1798 : Posse Comitatus :¬†(iv)¬†¬†George,¬†(iv)¬†¬†John¬†and¬†¬†(iii)¬†William¬†Stockley are all recorded as ‘farmers’: William is also listed as having four horses, a wagon, and two carts ¬†(n.b. generation (iv) were in their 20s in 1798)
  • 1798 : (iv)¬†George Stockley assessed to be taxed ¬£5 9s 6d on land he owned which was occupied by¬†William Stockley¬†[this was one of the highest amounts of tax assessed]; and¬†William also occupied land owned by John Jackson taxed at ¬£2 7s 7d.

  • 1873 : auction of “Two valuable Closes of old PASTURE LAND, called “The Commons”, containing together 15 acres …¬†with the newly-erected brick and slated hovel standing thereon … copyhold of Inheritance, nearly equal in value to Freehold, and is sold subject to the payment of 10s. weekly during the life of Mr. James Stockley, now in the 56th year of his age”¬†[i.e. b. abt 1817 so prob (v) James Sewell Stockley son of (iv) John Jackson & Sarah Stockley … who would therefore have succeeded to it as eldest son from his father (iv) JJS and¬†implies eldest-son direct line (iii) William and (ii) Edward … and I wonder if it is the same 14 acres adjoining Wood Lane allotted to his brother William at Inclosure in 1774, which presumably passed to his heir-at law since he didn’t have any known surviving children]
